February 2 is Groundhog Day: a real American tradition that inspired the famous 1993 film.
According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on February 2nd and sees its shadow, it will go back into its hole and there will be six more weeks of winter weather ahead. If he does not find his shadow, the animal will stay outside and look for it, translating into an early arrival of spring.
In the movie we see the main character experience this same day repeatedly, giving rise to the term being adopted to describe a situation in which a series of unwelcome or tedious events appear to be recurring in the same way.
We all experience our own ‘Groundhog Days’ where we can feel we are stuck in a rut, where things stay the same and we face the same challenges. It’s no different in the business world.
At Elephants Child we see businesses making the same mistakes over and over again and wondering why nothing is changing. It could be a lack of a business strategy, continued prioritisation of day-to-day administration tasks rather than seeing a bigger picture or investment into the same marketing channels that don’t produce results. You feel like you’re flat lining, spending each day ‘in’ the business – not ‘on’ the business.
