Should my business use AI for recruitment?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an area of fast-paced change that brings both opportunities and challenges for businesses. It’s an area we are regularly discussing with our clients and how they can use AI tools to improve productivity and boost growth prospects. Chloe Carey, our HR Specialist, looks at the pros and cons of using AI for recruitment.

Pros of AI for recruitment

  1. Efficiency and Speed: AI can significantly streamline the recruitment process. By using tools to help write job descriptions, benchmark salary expectations, and automating tasks such as cv screening, AI can reduce the time it takes to fill positions. This is especially beneficial for small businesses with limited HR resources.
  2. Cost-Effective: Small businesses often operate on tight budgets. AI can help cut costs associated with recruitment agencies and job advertisements by efficiently managing the hiring process in-house.
  3. Enhanced Candidate Matching: AI algorithms can analyse job requirements and candidate profiles to find the best matches. This can help to improve the quality of new staff members, leading to better job performance and lower turnover rates. Small businesses can benefit from a more targeted approach to recruitment.

Cons of AI for recruitment

  1. High Initial Investment: Implementing AI tools can be expensive initially. Small businesses may struggle with the upfront costs of AI software and the necessary training for employees to use these tools effectively. That said, there are low cost products in the market place that will enable you to try out AI before you make any significant investment.
  2. Too generic: Using AI for job descriptions risks your job adverts sounding like everyone else’s and not incorporating some of the aspects that make your business unique. Be sure to read through any generated content carefully and tweak it to match your voice.  Watch out for American spellings and phrases as a sure fire give away of AI generated content.
  3. Risk of Over-Reliance: While AI can enhance efficiency, over-reliance on technology can lead to a lack of human touch in the recruitment process. Building relationships and understanding the nuances of a candidate’s personality are aspects that AI cannot fully replicate.

Using AI can offer many benefits for businesses in recruitment, but we strongly recommend that business owners and senior managers use tools to support recruitment and that anything done by an AI tool is used as a draft or starting point and then proofread, enhanced, or quality checked.
